A Nigerian woman recently took to social media to share a troubling experience involving her new landlord, who refunded her rent payment in full and requested that she vacate the apartment upon discovering that she is both a single woman and a Christian.
The woman, known on X (formerly Twitter) as @Ajokeaadee, detailed her ordeal in a viral post that quickly gained attention online.
According to her account, the landlord had only recently assumed ownership of the property and was reportedly unhappy to learn that the caretaker had rented one of the apartments to a single Christian woman without informing her.
She explained her experience in her post: “So, my new landlord refunded my payment in full yesterday because she didn’t know the caretaker rented her apartment to a single lady🤣 She doesn’t want a single lady or a Christian in her building! (White garment people especially).”
Expressing her shock and disappointment, she added, “Some Lagos landlords are not renting out their property to you if you’re single?? Oh wow! 💔”
Her post quickly sparked widespread discussion, with many Nigerians commenting and sharing their own stories, shedding light on discriminatory rental practices faced by singles and certain religious groups in parts of Lagos.

@monaisaid: “This was one of the reasons I ended up not staying when I moved. My experience was just like yours and they were talking about me being Yoruba too like that affected anything.”
@pascaliito: “My friend’s money was refunded because he was Igbo. Landlord doesn’t want Igbo in his compound.”
@abbietayo: “I made a video about this. Talked about how they didn’t rent a house to me because I was single, my tribe, etc.”
