A lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has recently gone viral after adopting an innovative “photo attendance” system designed to combat the widespread issues of signature forgery and chronic absenteeism among students.
Dr. Taiwo Oluwaseyi, a lecturer known on TikTok by the handle @taiwo_2222, shared a video demonstrating the new attendance method. Instead of relying on the traditional sign-in sheets, students are now required to gather for a group photo taken at the end of every lecture session. This photograph serves as concrete evidence of attendance, replacing the often-forged signature lists.
The video provides a clear view of the classroom environment, showing students lining up patiently after class to be captured in the attendance photo. According to Dr. Taiwo, this creative approach has already led to a notable increase in student presence, as many are more motivated to attend classes regularly to avoid being marked absent.
In his post, the lecturer emphasized the problems posed by the old system, stating, “No more signature attendance. Signature forging is real. It’s either you show in the class picture or not.”
He further explained that under this new attendance protocol, any student who does not appear in the group photo will automatically be recorded as absent, regardless of whether their name is found on any signed register.
“If you’re not in the photo, you weren’t in class. That’s the rule,” he declared firmly, underscoring the strict enforcement of this attendance policy to ensure fairness and authenticity.
