Pregnant woman dies during surgery after Jehovah’s Witness doctor declines blood transfusion

A Nigerian man identified as Chris Adams has shared a heartbreaking account on Facebook, mourning the sudden and tragic death of his pregnant wife, Victoria Paris. According to Adams, she passed away during childbirth at a hospital in Port Harcourt after a woman who served as the attending doctor allegedly refused to perform a necessary blood transfusion, citing religious reasons rooted in her faith as a Jehovah’s Witness.

In his emotional post, Adams explained that his wife, who was seven months pregnant at the time, began experiencing severe abdominal pains. She was immediately rushed to Standard Maternity Clinic, located in the Borokiri Church Hill area of Port Harcourt, a facility where she had previously given birth to their other children without complications.

This time, however, events took a distressing turn. Adams narrated that his wife had to undergo an emergency Caesarean section (CS), which was medically successful in delivering the child. Despite the successful procedure, Victoria reportedly lost a substantial amount of blood and required an urgent transfusion to stabilize her condition and save her life.

To the family's dismay, the doctor in charge allegedly declined to carry out or authorize the transfusion due to her religious belief as a Jehovah’s Witness, a denomination known for opposing blood transfusions. This decision, according to Adams, directly contributed to his wife's death, leaving their family devastated.

Further compounding the tragedy, Adams pointed out several issues with the hospital’s operational standards. He claimed that the medical facility lost electricity in the middle of the surgery and had to hastily start a generator to continue the operation — a delay that may have worsened the situation. He criticized the hospital for prioritizing personal beliefs over patient safety and accused them of misleading the family into signing a consent form for the procedure without full disclosure of the doctor’s religious constraints.

Adams concluded his post by expressing profound grief and calling for accountability and justice over what he described as a preventable death caused by religious interference in medical care.

His full statement reads:

“We lost our beloved to the cold hands of death. My beloved was 7 months pregnant and started feeling pains in her stomach. She was rushed to Standard Maternity Clinic here in Port Harcourt at Borokiri Church Hill.”

“To be honest, it was at this hospital she gave birth to her other children, but this case was different. She gave birth through CS — I mean operation.”

“The doctor ran an operation on her, which was successful, but my beloved lost a lot of blood and needed blood to support her life.”

“But the doctor said she doesn’t do that in her hospital because she is a religious person (Jehovah’s Witness).”

“First, you forget your religion before running a hospital.”

“Second, you run an operation in your hospital with Nigerian NEPA light, which failed during the operation before they started running to put on the generator. My beloved was killed by the doctor’s religious belief.”

“The family was tricked to sign for the operation because of their selfish interest. Victoria Paris, we miss you. I NEED JUSTICE FOR MY BELOVED.”
