The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has called on Nigerians to exercise caution and avoid drawing premature conclusions regarding the recent allegations of Naira abuse against prominent Niger Delta leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo.
This plea comes in the wake of a viral video showing Tompolo celebrating his 54th birthday while a man was seen lavishly spraying ₦1,000 notes around him. The video immediately sparked widespread reactions online, with many users calling for the EFCC to investigate the incident and hold all involved accountable in order to demonstrate the agency’s commitment to justice and impartiality.
In response to the growing public interest, Olukoyede revealed during an interview with TVC that the EFCC has officially invited Tompolo for questioning. He assured Nigerians that no one is above the law and that the Commission is actively looking into the matter as part of its standard investigative procedures.
However, the EFCC boss was quick to caution against assuming guilt based solely on the video, stressing that the investigation is still in its early stages. He explained that the viral footage is currently undergoing forensic analysis due to concerns that it may have been altered or digitally manipulated, which could misrepresent the actual events.
“We have invited Tompolo, the whole Nigerians know that, and we said there is no human that is above the law,” Olukoyede said firmly.
He continued, “Nobody should go and condemn Tompolo for the allegation. It’s a mere allegation for now. We have subjected the video to forensic analysis because these days, people can impose… you know?”
Olukoyede stressed the importance of due process and the principle of fair hearing, stating that no conclusion will be drawn until the investigation is completed. “Not until we conclude the case, we cannot say Tompolo is guilty or not. We must give every Nigerian fair hearing or benefit of doubt,” he added.
The EFCC’s balanced approach to the case has been widely discussed across social media, with citizens awaiting further developments in the ongoing in
vestigation.
