According to her, there are three key reasons that influenced her decision to stop attending Nigerian churches and instead become a regular member of a White church community in Vancouver.

First, she highlighted the style of teaching as her primary motivation. Abeks noted that the sermons at her current church are always delivered with clarity and supported with relatable real-life examples. She emphasized how this approach makes it easier for her to grasp the message, especially when she might not be deeply familiar with certain parts of the Bible.

“…The first reason is cause of the teachings. They are always relatable and properly explained with real life examples so even if you are not very familiar with the Bible, you would definitely understand the message,” she said in the video.

The second reason she gave focused on praise and worship style. While acknowledging her love for the high-energy and vibrant style of worship often associated with Nigerian churches, she expressed a preference for the calm and peaceful atmosphere in her White church. She explained that the serene worship environment helps her concentrate better and feel more spiritually connected during service.

“The second reason is cause of the praise and worship. They are always so calm and honestly, it just brings me so much peace. Don’t get me wrong. I love the vibrant, energetic praise and worship we have in Nigerian churches, but for me, I personally just prefer the calmness that comes with their worship. It also makes it easier for me to pray and talk to God because there are not so many loud voices or people screaming, so I don’t get distracted easily,” she explained.

Finally, she discussed the freedom of expression she enjoys in her current church. Abeks revealed that she feels more comfortable expressing her emotions during service without the fear of being recorded or broadcasted on large screens by media teams, which she claims is a common occurrence in many Nigerian churches.

“Lastly, I like that I can be super comfortable to cry or do whatever without worrying that the cameraman would put my face on the big screen,” she added.

Her candid remarks have resonated with many Nigerians and immigrants who often face cultural adjustments in their new countries. The video has since attracted a lot of engagement, with viewers commenting on similar experiences, while others defended Nigerian church traditions and practices.

This revelation adds to ongoing conversations among the Nigerian diaspora about religious practices, cultural comfort, and adapting to new environments abroad.
