Kenyan President William Ruto has recently voiced his concern over the increasing trend of Kenyan women choosing to marry Nigerian men, a situation he finds notable enough to mention publicly — including in reference to his own family.
At a recent wedding ceremony event, President Ruto humorously highlighted this growing phenomenon, revealing that two of his daughters have actually married Nigerian men. This personal disclosure added a lighthearted yet pointed note to his remarks on the matter.
With a tone mixing jest and mild worry, he questioned why Kenyan men appear to be lagging behind in the romantic competition, expressing bewilderment at the preference Kenyan women are showing for Nigerian partners.
“My daughter is married to a Nigerian, and this one is now married to a Nigerian. And our guys around; I don’t know, are you slow? I don’t know,” the president quipped, poking fun at Kenyan men’s apparent lack of success in winning the hearts of Kenyan women compared to their Nigerian counterparts.
He went further to joke about the potential consequences of this trend, warning that if the preference for Nigerian men continues to grow, Kenya could experience what he termed a “brain drain,” where more and more Kenyan women choose to marry outside their country, potentially impacting local demographics and social dynamics.
Although Ruto’s remarks were made in a lighthearted and humorous fashion, they have nevertheless sparked significant conversations on social media platforms, with users from both Kenya and Nigeria weighing in on the discussion.
For instance, an Instagram user, @folajimijoseph, shared a personal anecdote, writing: “I was in the elevator with a Brazilian tourist in New York, she asked where I’m from, the moment I mentioned Nigeria there was this glow on her face. Then she said ‘I love Nigerians’. Nigerian men are gold worldwide.” This comment illustrates the positive global reputation Nigerian men enjoy in various parts of the world.
Another user, @xrixy_walker, enthusiastically added: “Nigerian men keep representin’. The most highly sought after men in the world. 💯✅.” This further reinforces the notion of Nigerian men’s desirability on an international scale.
Adding to the conversation, @chukwunonsoinoma offered a perspective encouraging Kenyan men to also consider Nigerian women as potential life partners: “The men should come and marry Nigerian ladies. We have great women that will help build the economy of Kenya and make great impacts.”
