The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has issued an important public health advisory, warning Nigerians about the serious dangers of excessive salt consumption. This advisory follows the circulation of a viral video featuring Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, the founder of Loveworld Incorporated (Christ Embassy).
In the viral video, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome was seen urging his followers to increase their salt intake, claiming that the advice to limit salt consumption was part of a broader agenda to push pharmaceutical drugs on the public.

In his statement during a church service, Pastor Oyakhilome said …
“They told you not to take salt so that you can buy their drugs—drugs that contain sodium; Salt is not your enemy.”
This message has raised concerns, leading the Federal Ministry of Health to issue a strong response. The Ministry urged Nigerians to adhere to scientifically backed dietary guidelines and warned against misinformation that could jeopardize public health. In the official statement, the Ministry highlighted the significant risks associated with excessive salt intake, including the potential for severe health complications.
The Ministry’s statement, signed by Alaba Balogun, Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, emphasized the need to counter false information that could negatively influence public health. The statement reads …
“The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has observed a widely circulated video in which a respected religious leader discourages Nigerians from heeding medical advice on salt consumption. While we deeply respect the important role of faith and religious leaders in our society, it is crucial to correct misinformation that poses a risk to public health.”
Balogun further stressed that while salt contains sodium, which is an essential mineral needed for proper nerve and muscle function, overconsumption of salt is linked to numerous dangerous health conditions. The statement highlighted the connection between excessive salt intake and chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, heart failure, stroke, kidney disease, and other related ailments.
“Excessive salt intake is linked to high blood pressure, heart failure, stroke, kidney disease, and more,” Balogun cautioned, stressing that the consequences of ignoring proper salt consumption guidelines can be devastating to individual health.
He also referred to international health standards, pointing out that the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that adults should consume no more than 5 grams of salt per day, which is roughly equivalent to one teaspoon. The Ministry urged Nigerians to be mindful of these global health guidelines to maintain optimal health and well-being.
In light of the recent misleading claims, the Ministry strongly encouraged the public to consult qualified health professionals for accurate dietary advice and to critically assess any claims that lack scientific evidence or are not backed by medical research. The Ministry reiterated its commitment to promoting health awareness and educating the public on safe and healthy li
festyle practices.
