A Nigerian man has successfully recovered a total of ₦2 million, including ₦40,000 charged as POS fees, after being unlawfully extorted by police officers at the FCID Alagbon office located in Ikoyi, Lagos State.
The recovery was made possible following a formal complaint submitted to the relevant authorities, a development first disclosed in a social media post on X (formerly Twitter).
The Twitter user, @YemieFash, initially raised public awareness by tagging Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Ben Hundeyin. He reported that a young man, who was personally known to him, had been extorted at gunpoint by police officers for allegedly engaging in cryptocurrency trading.
In his initial statement, he wrote: “Hello @BenHundeyin, I’m writing to bring to your attention a deeply troubling incident involving some officers from the FCID Alagbon office in Ikoyi.”
“Yesterday, they forcefully extorted ₦2 million from a young man whose only alleged offense was trading cryptocurrency.”
“According to the victim, the officers held him at gunpoint and compelled him to transfer ₦2 million to an account they provided.”
“The funds do not belong to him, and he was not given any official documentation or charge. While he doesn’t have their photos or contact details, he can identify the officers and the specific office where this abuse occurred.”
The post urged for an immediate and thorough investigation into the matter and called for appropriate disciplinary action against the officers involved in this extortion.
Days later, @YemieFash posted an update confirming the full refund of the money: “The ₦2,000,000 that was extorted has been fully refunded, along with the ₦40,000 POS charges, bringing the total to ₦2,040,000. I sincerely thank the AIG of @FCID_ANNEX Alagbon, AIG Margaret Ochalla, for her intervention. Kudos also to the PRO, @mayegunAmina, and the @PoliceNG_CRU for their swift action.”
He further disclosed that the police officers implicated in the incident had been detained and were set to face disciplinary measures, expressing optimism that this action would serve as a deterrent to similar misconduct in the future.
The post quickly gained traction online, eliciting a variety of reactions from concerned Nigerians in the comments section.
See some reactions below:
@sigint_nigeria: “I can bet my life on it that nothing is being done to those officers. Those officers from @FCID_ANNEX are bunch of criminals; they threatened to kill and frame a friend of mine if he didn’t pay up. They are more like kidnappers, even worse.”
@daylearny: “I hope this assurance that they will be punished is not just by mouth.”
@Olota48: “Well done sir, all these bad eggs are just too many. I think if there was a law that held even the DPO accountable if any officer extorted, things would improve.”
@_theEmmaa: “When are the armed robbers that robbed this victim going to see the inside of prison? Surely taking someone else’s money by force is armed robbery?”
@OlaiyaOlay77887: “Wow! This is great news. Thank you very much for a job well done sir. May the Lord reward you abundantly.”
@jubi_OMEIZA: “I chose my onions, and I don’t follow nonsense. Thanks boss for all you do here. Only God can reward you. Proud of you always.”
@AyamTjay: “Another set are on the road already looking for prey. They won’t stop until the NPF stops recruiting mentally lazy folks who did nothing early in life but suddenly rush to enroll in Police college to continue their frivolity in government attire.”
