Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has publicly confirmed that he turned down a highly lucrative offer from Saudi Pro League powerhouse Al-Hilal so he could stay at Old Trafford and continue competing “at the highest level.” This revelation came amidst growing speculation about his future following the reported transfer interest from the Middle Eastern club.
According to sources, Al-Hilal were prepared to pay Manchester United a staggering £100 million transfer fee. Additionally, the club offered Fernandes a personal contract worth around £200 million spread over three years, effectively tripling his current salary and presenting a financial package difficult to ignore.
Despite the promising nature of the offer, negotiations between the Saudi club and Fernandes’ representatives were said to be progressing positively until the midfielder made his final decision to reject the move.
Speaking to reporters ahead of Portugal’s UEFA Nations League semi-final clash against Germany, Fernandes revealed, “There was an opportunity. The president [of Al-Hilal] called me and asked if I wanted to go there. They were waiting for me.”
However, he emphasized his priorities, saying, “But I want to play at the highest level and compete for major titles.” This statement highlights his commitment to maintaining his competitive edge in European football rather than pursuing a financially motivated move.
Fernandes also disclosed that he sought advice from United head coach Ruben Amorim during the decision-making process. “I spoke to coach Amorim and he asked me not to go. My wife asked me what I wanted to do,” he explained, indicating the personal and professional counsel that shaped his choice.
Furthermore, Fernandes confirmed that Manchester United were not interested in selling him, stating, “Manchester United didn’t want to sell me. They don’t need the money. If I had wanted to leave, they would have made it happen.” This statement underscores the club’s strong desire to keep the midfielder as part of their squad.
The decision by Bruno Fernandes to stay at Manchester United despite the lucrative offer from Al-Hilal reinforces his ambition to compete at the highest level and fight for major trophies with his current club.
