Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoleye Sowore, has openly criticized the late Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari, in a strongly worded statement following the news of his passing.
It will be recalled that Buhari died on the 13th of July, 2025, in a clinic in London, after a prolonged battle with an undisclosed illness.
In his reaction, Sowore highlighted what he described as Buhari’s legacy of human rights violations and abuse of power, asserting that tyrants should not be mourned but rather remembered for the suffering they inflicted on their victims.
Detailing his allegations, Sowore accused Buhari of several grave actions during his tenure as president and military head of state. He claimed Buhari was responsible for the massacre of hundreds of Shiite Muslims, including women and children, and the violent suppression of peaceful #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate in 2020.
He also referenced the mysterious disappearance of activist Dadiyata and the brutal crackdown on young people from the Southeast region, whom Buhari allegedly branded as IPOB members. Sowore further accused the late president of disobeying court orders, jailing critics without justification, and destroying the nation’s economy and institutions.
“Muhammadu Buhari slaughtered hundreds of Shiites, men, women, and even children,” Sowore wrote. “He ordered soldiers of the Nigerian Army to open fire on peaceful #EndSARS protesters waving the Nigerian flag. He ‘disappeared’ Dadiyata. He ordered the massacre of young Southeasterners whom he branded IPOB. He disobeyed court orders, jailed critics arbitrarily, destroyed the economy, and ruined everything he touched.”
He criticized the tendency of some Nigerians to honor deceased leaders regardless of their records, saying it was “shameful” to do so in Buhari’s case. Sowore stressed that rather than celebrate tyrants, society should focus on remembering their victims and fighting for justice.
“And now, because he’s dead, some people with selective memory want us to mourn or worship him? Shameful. NO, we do not mourn tyrants. We remember their victims. @muhammadubuhari had no soul,” he concluded.
Sowore’s comments have since gone viral on social media, drawing support from some Nigerians who share his views, while others criticized him for speaking ill of the dead.
