Publisher, activist, and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has once again launched a scathing criticism against Peter Obi and the Labour Party, describing them as ineffective and lacking the courage to serve as a real opposition to the current administration. In an explosive interview on Channels TV’s Inside Sources with Maupe Ogun-Yusuf, Sowore shared his thoughts on the current state of political opposition in Nigeria and did not hold back in his assessment.

Sowore expressed disappointment in Peter Obi’s political style, claiming he has failed to live up to the expectations of a true opposition figure. He stated, “I don’t want to talk about Peter Obi anymore. Contrary to the belief that Peter Obi was opposed to the system or capable of opposing the system, he is incapable of doing it.”

In the interview, Sowore likened the Labour Party to a temporary political shelter, one that lacked a strong ideological foundation. “I stated in 2022 and 2023 that the Labour Party was a short-term rental—an Airbnb. You move in, you check out when your time expires. When they are done with Obi, they will move the rental to another place,” he said, emphasizing his view that the party served only a short-lived electoral purpose without real political depth.

He argued that Obi’s sudden rise during the 2023 elections was not based on strong political principles but rather a reaction to the controversial Muslim-Muslim ticket adopted by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). “Christians were against Islamizing Nigeria, and Peter Obi was the best available candidate,” he noted, pointing out that Obi was a convenient alternative rather than a revolutionary figure.

Sowore further stated that Obi has not demonstrated the kind of bold activism required to challenge the status quo, especially in critical moments like post-election protests or during economic hardships. “He didn’t even organise his supporters to fight for his own election victory. He didn’t fight when fuel prices increased. He has never done anything that the opposition does,” he argued.

He pointed to past opposition leaders like President Buhari and Bola Tinubu who actively led protests during their time in opposition. He challenged Obi’s supporters by saying, “Even if the 2012 protesters are gone, what about your own six million voters? Put 60,000 people on the streets of Abuja and see how the government reacts.”

According to Sowore, the failure of Obi and his followers to mobilize for protests and civil resistance shows their unwillingness to drive true systemic change. “You a
