Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has voiced a powerful reflection on leadership in Nigeria, stating that the country is a difficult place for good people who are determined to lead with integrity and make positive change.

Obi made these remarks during a heartfelt speech at a special thanksgiving service organized by the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Umuahia, Abia State. The event was held to mark the two-year anniversary of Governor Alex Otti’s administration, an occasion that brought together political leaders, clergy, government officials, and citizens to reflect on leadership and governance in Nigeria.

During his speech, Obi emphasized the importance of praying for leaders who are genuinely committed to doing the right thing. He called on Nigerians to support their leaders spiritually, especially those who resist corruption and misuse of public funds.

“It is difficult to govern Nigeria, especially when you want to do it right,” Obi said. “Continue to remember the Governor and his team in prayers. Do the same for Nigeria; that God should touch the hearts of our leaders to use public money for public good. It is not our money—we are only trustees.”

He praised Governor Alex Otti’s remarkable performance since assuming office, describing it as a refreshing departure from the traditional norm of governance in Nigeria. Obi said Otti’s success in just two years was proof that impactful governance doesn’t require a long time but a sincere commitment to serve.

“We have come to celebrate two years with a difference. People always say they need eight or ten years to make a change, but I have always said that one day can make a difference. In Abia, everyone can see the change—you don’t need the radio or someone to tell you,” Obi noted.

Reiterating his passion for national transformation, Obi said: “I’m not desperate to be President. I’m desperate to see Nigeria work. We want future leaders like Governor Otti.” His words resonated strongly with attendees, many of whom applauded his commitment to the greater good.

Responding to the accolades, Governor Alex Otti attributed the success of his administration to divine guidance and support from his team. Citing a Bible verse from 1 Corinthians 3:6-7, he remarked: “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God gave the increase. We’ve all worked hard, but nothing would have come out of it if God didn’t back us. That’s why we return all thanks to Him.”

Otti went on to appreciate the collaborative efforts of the legislative and judicial arms of the state government, as well as the dedication of his cabinet members. He stressed that these combined efforts were crucial to achieving the goals of what he described as “the new Abia project.”

The Governor also expressed his deep appreciation for Peter Obi’s continuous support and encouragement, describing the former Anambra governor as “a shining example of good governance” and a role model for future generations of Nigerian leaders.

The thanksgiving service served not only as a spiritual gathering but also as a moment of national reflection. Attendees left inspired by the words of both men, hopeful for a future where leadership in Nigeria is guided by sincerity, service, and a genuine desire to

make a difference.
