The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last election, Peter Obi, recently displayed a rare act of compassion and humility when he interrupted his journey to help an elderly woman in distress on the road.
The woman had been struggling to board a commercial bus while carrying a heavy load of goods, when she tripped and her items scattered across the ground. Without hesitation, Obi instructed his driver to turn back so he could assist her personally.
This touching event was shared on social media by @TheSerahIbrahim via X (formerly Twitter), who narrated that Obi was on his way to attend the burial ceremony of veteran Nollywood actress, Mrs. Nkechi Winifred Nweje, when he noticed the incident across the road.
According to Serah, Obi immediately became concerned upon seeing the woman in distress. When he reached her, he ensured she was not injured and listened carefully as she explained that her spilled goods were meant for sale at the market—the only means through which she earns a living.
She said she invested ₦8,000 into the goods and had hoped to make a ₦2,000 profit, but with the damage caused by the fall, even recovering the cost seemed impossible.
Moved by her story and situation, Obi not only assisted her in picking up the scattered goods but also paid for the entire loss, offering her a generous amount that left her overwhelmed with gratitude.
The woman, visibly emotional, gave him a hug and even tried to offer him some of her salvaged produce as a token of appreciation.
The eyewitness account further revealed that other passersby had joined in helping the woman before Obi’s intervention, but it was his act of generosity and concern that made a lasting impact on everyone around.
Serah used the moment to highlight the contrast between the daily struggles of ordinary Nigerians and the lifestyle of many political leaders, calling for a new kind of leadership—one that serves the people with empathy and integrity.
She concluded with the phrase: “A new Nigeria is POssible.”
As expected, the post went viral and drew widespread admiration from Nigerians online who praised Obi for consistently showing kindness and humility in his dealings with people.

@segun_olomola: “A true leader is a true leader no two ways about it. Unlike the ones who are junketing about all over the world in president jets, when people are being kpai all over the world. And his slaves will be on social media praising him. Compassion is a virtue.”
