
The Federal Government has officially declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, as a public holiday in celebration of this year’s Democracy Day. This announcement underscores the nation’s commitment to commemorating the historic journey of Nigeria’s democracy.
The announcement was made through an official statement by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, who spoke on behalf of the federal government. The declaration was authorized by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians on this significant occasion, highlighting that the country is marking 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, a milestone that reflects the resilience and progress of the nation.
“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign, peace is sustained, and our future assured,” he said, emphasizing the day’s symbolic importance to Nigerians everywhere.
He further noted that Nigeria’s 26 years of democratic rule is a testament to the strength, resilience, and courage of its people, expressing that the nation’s hope is now renewed more than ever.
“The last 26 years tells the story of our resilience, strength and courage and a hope Renewed than ever,” the minister affirmed.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, under the Renewed Hope agenda, to upholding democratic values and ensuring the people’s will shapes Nigeria’s cultural, economic, social, and political systems.
He stressed that democracy thrives when there is room for growth and improvement, and the government remains dedicated to fostering a stronger democratic environment for all Nigerians.
