A concerned Nigerian citizen has urgently called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to launch a thorough investigation into President Bola Tinubu following allegations of an exorbitant budget allocation amounting to ₦266.25 million for just one streetlight.
The serious allegation was brought to light in a widely shared post on X (formerly known as Twitter) by the user @Ode_Luwa, who appealed to the anti-corruption agency to take swift and decisive action against what appears to be a blatant misuse of public funds.
In the post, the user wrote: “Dear @officialEFCC, your immediate attention is needed here. How can President Tinubu’s administration allocate a staggering ₦393.2 billion for only 1,477 streetlights? That breaks down to ₦266.25 million for a single streetlight pole. This sum is outrageously high and could instead be used to build a large-scale streetlight manufacturing factory that would permanently resolve Nigeria’s ongoing streetlight challenges.”
The post also drew attention to another controversial budget item, raising further concerns about fiscal irresponsibility:
“Another ₦114.53 billion has been earmarked for just 538 boreholes, which means ₦211 million to sink a single borehole. This is utterly unreasonable and defies logic. We implore the EFCC to investigate these figures promptly. This gross mismanagement is a grave injustice to every Nigerian citizen.”
As the post gained traction across social media platforms, numerous Nigerians voiced their indignation and demanded greater transparency and accountability from the government and its agencies.
Below are some of the reactions from concerned Nigerians:
@0xveektor: “You expect them to bite the finger that feeds them?”
@sasmanic: “The EFCC is nothing but a government lapdog that prosecutes ordinary citizens. Our ruling class is corrupt, yet how many have they truly prosecuted?”
@BigDEnergy000: “They should send Battalion 50 to the EFCC headquarters, deal with all these corrupt folks properly, then sweep through their branch offices. Ask NEPA about this too.”
@RichardAvwenake: “I heard the EFCC chairman is a Redeemed Christian Church pastor. I’ve lost faith in religious people because they are often the worst when dealing with those outside their religion. They justify corruption and spread hatred.”
@unamaugo: “All they’ll do is investigate the whistleblower and go after their entire family and associates just to intimidate people. Up APC.”
@Osaro_Igbinosa: “EFCC cannot act here alone. It’s up to the legislature to intervene. They can ask EFCC to verify the figures and conclude based on the findings, but EFCC alone cannot accuse the presidency, even if the numbers look suspicious. That’s why Buhari couldn’t prosecute GEJ despite trying.”
