Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has officially declared a State of Emergency on public schools across the state following an alarming inspection that revealed the deplorable conditions of the learning facilities.

During his visit to Evbareke Secondary School in Egor and Army Day Secondary School in Ikpoba-Okha on Tuesday, March 25, the governor expressed deep disappointment over the deteriorating infrastructure and the unhealthy environment in which students and teachers are forced to operate.

In a strongly worded statement, Okpebholo emphasized the urgency of intervention, describing the situation as completely unacceptable.

“I feel very bad, I must be honest with you. Look at this place—children are here studying under such terrible conditions. For me, it is unacceptable,” he stated while visibly displeased.

Several students and teachers took the opportunity to voice their grievances, painting a grim picture of their daily struggles. Many lamented the lack of proper classroom structures, damaged roofs, and unsanitary conditions that make learning difficult.

One of the students shared a particularly distressing account, saying: “Sometimes when we arrive in the morning for classes, we find excreta littered all over the place. The classrooms are in terrible shape, and the roofs leak whenever it rains.”

Teachers also raised serious concerns about the shortage of basic facilities, including chairs, desks, and proper sanitation systems. Many of them urged the state government to take immediate steps to address these challenges and create a more conducive learning environment for students.

The governor assured them that his administration would prioritize educational infrastructure and take swift action to rehabilitate public schools across the state.

This declaration of a State of Emergency in public schools signals the beginning of a renewed focus on the education sector, with expectations that urgent renovations and improvements will soon commence.
