Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State — July 13, 2025

The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed away at the age of 91. His demise was confirmed on Sunday, July 13, 2025, marking the end of an era for the Ijebu people and the Yoruba nation at large.

Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, becoming one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs with a remarkable reign spanning over 65 years. Known for his wisdom, courage, and unwavering dedication to his people, he was widely respected not only among the Yoruba but across Nigeria and beyond.

Throughout his reign, Oba Adetona played a pivotal role in promoting peace, unity, and development in Ijebuland. He was a strong advocate for traditional values while also championing modernization and education among his people. Under his leadership, the annual Ojude Oba festival gained global recognition, attracting visitors from around the world.

His death comes only hours after the passing of his close friend, former President Muhammadu Buhari, making the day particularly somber for the nation.

Condolence messages have begun to pour in from traditional rulers, political leaders, and citizens across the country. Ogun State Governor and other dignitaries are expected to visit the royal family in Ijebu-Ode in the coming days.

Funeral arrangements and succession plans are expected to be announced by the royal council in due course.

Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona will be remembered as a visionary monarch who dedicated his life to the service of his people and the promotion of Yoruba culture.

May his soul rest in perfect peace.
