    Atiku Abubakar Resigns from PDP

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking the end of his long-standing and influential relationship with the party he played a key role in founding and shaping over several decades.

In a formal letter dated July 14 and addressed directly to the PDP Ward Chairman of Jada Ward 1, located in his home state of Adamawa, Atiku Abubakar declared his immediate exit from the party. He attributed this decision to deep-seated and irreconcilable differences with the current leadership, as well as dissatisfaction with the overall direction in which the party is heading.

“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for,” Atiku wrote passionately in his resignation letter, emphasizing his disappointment and concern over the loss of the party's original ideals and vision.

Atiku did not fail to acknowledge the pivotal opportunities the PDP offered him throughout his political career. He expressed profound gratitude for being entrusted with significant responsibilities, including serving as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007 under President Olusegun Obasanjo. Additionally, he was the party’s flag bearer in both the 2019 and 2023 presidential elections, where he represented the PDP on the national stage.

His decision to resign comes at a critical moment when Nigeria’s political landscape is witnessing intensified discussions about forming a robust opposition alliance. In recent months, Atiku has reportedly been deeply involved in behind-the-scenes negotiations aimed at consolidating various opposition forces. These efforts are largely focused on the possibility of building a united front under the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) as part of strategic preparations for the highly anticipated 2027 general elections.

Political analysts suggest that Atiku’s resignation could significantly reshape opposition dynamics in the country, signaling potential realignments and the emergence of new coalitions that may challenge the current ruling party in future elections. Supporters and critics alike are closely watching his next move, as he remains one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures.
