Nigerian disc jockey, musician, and prominent activist, DJ Switch, has sparked intense debates online following her controversial reaction to the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.
Shortly after the news of Buhari’s demise broke, DJ Switch took to her Instagram story to express her thoughts in a message that many described as harsh and celebratory. In her post, she wrote: “The sweet reality of inevitability. RIP MF. One down.”
Her comment quickly spread across various social media platforms and provoked an immediate backlash. Many Nigerians and netizens accused her of disrespecting the dead and lacking compassion, while some others supported her stance, describing it as a bold expression of frustration over the state of the nation during Buhari’s tenure.
In response to the heavy criticism, DJ Switch posted a follow-up video where she doubled down on her comments and explained her reasons in detail. She argued that Buhari's leadership record was filled with failures and that he left the country worse off than he met it. According to her, the widespread celebration or indifference to his death is a direct result of his governance style.
“Please tell me what is Buhari’s achievement apart from destroying Nigeria. When you are a bad leader, people will drink to your demise, but when you lead with fairness, people will mourn when you die,” she declared firmly in the video.
She went further to state that she felt no need to justify or prove her empathy to anyone. For her, the news of Buhari’s death felt like a form of long-awaited justice for Nigerians who suffered under his rule. She concluded her remarks by making a cryptic comment: “Next on the list, T-Pain, how far?”, which has also left fans speculating about its deeper meaning.
DJ Switch rose to global prominence during the 2020 #EndSARS protests against police brutality, particularly after she live-streamed the harrowing events at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020. Since then, she has remained an outspoken critic of successive Nigerian governments and a strong advocate for human rights and justice.
Her latest comments have once again positioned her at the center of national conversations, highlighting the deep divisions in how Nigerians view past leaders and their legacies. While some have praised her for her courage and honesty, others believe her statements crossed a moral line by showing apparent joy at someone’s death.
