Nigerians have flooded various social media platforms with mixed and intense reactions after the release of the trailer for a new Nollywood movie titled Verydarkblackman, inspired by the controversial and outspoken activist Verydarkman.
The film, which was produced by Anaele Ugochukwu Dominic, stars veteran actor Gentle Jack who takes on the lead role, portraying the fearless activist known for his hard-hitting commentaries and controversial online presence.

The announcement of the film, and particularly the release of its trailer, has sent social media into a frenzy. While some viewers find the portrayal humorous or unexpectedly creative, others have criticized the execution, labeling it as disrespectful and inappropriate, especially given the sensitive subject matter referenced in the movie.
Verydarkman, whose real name remains undisclosed to the public, rose to online fame for exposing and criticizing the marketing and distribution of unapproved skincare products in Nigeria. He later expanded his focus to address broader social issues, such as corruption, entertainment industry controversies, and the contentious circumstances surrounding the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.
The newly released movie attempts to dramatize his journey and influence, but it appears to have struck a nerve with many online commentators. Some have questioned the decision to produce such a film while the activist is still alive and active in the public eye, while others have raised concerns about the depiction of real-life events, including scenes that reference Mohbad’s tragic passing.
Reactions trailing Verydarkblackman movie
@debo_A1 wrote, “Gentle Jack shouldn’t have made a mess of himself by taking up this role. This is so shameful to watch.”
@mensahtitus5 stated, “Gentle Jack is a veteran in African movie space and shouldn’t have condescended so low to take such role. Quite pathetic!”
@AustineAluge1 wrote, “On a second thought, what if they got permission from Verydarkman before shooting the movie? Let’s not get angry. VDM is alive, he can actually see this and sue if it defames his character.”
@iam_harryjuana commented, “That Mohbad scene no necessary. Make una allow the boy rest in peace nau.”
The trailer continues to trend, sparking discussions about creative freedom, the boundaries of biographical storytelling, and ethical standards in Nollywood’s portrayal of real-life figures.
