Nigerian investigative journalist, Kemi Olunloyo, has stirred significant controversy with her reaction to the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on July 13, 2025, in London at the age of 82 after battling a prolonged illness.
In a strongly worded post shared on her official X (formerly Twitter) account, Kemi Olunloyo did not hold back as she criticized Buhari’s legacy, particularly highlighting his history of press suppression during his military regime. She referred to him as a “pathological violator of press freedom” and accused him of contributing to an era of fear and oppression for journalists in Nigeria.
Olunloyo also drew a personal connection by referencing her late father, Victor Omololu Olunloyo, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics. She provocatively remarked that she hoped Buhari and her father would meet for the first time “at the gates of hell,” suggesting that both men shared a similar controversial legacy in her eyes.
“Buhari and my father Olunloyo meet for the FIRST TIME at the Gates of Hell🔥🚒😈😁Same year😅🕊💔⚰️🪦🗳🇳🇬 2025. My father never met Buhari despite being in the same political party APC and ending my dad’s democracy in 1983,” she tweeted, expressing her deep resentment and unresolved issues surrounding both men.
Additionally, Kemi Olunloyo went further to allege that the Buhari family had long misrepresented his true age. She claimed that Buhari was actually 89 years old at the time of his death, not 82 as officially stated, citing that he and her father were both 48 years old in 1983 when Buhari overthrew President Shagari’s democratic government.
She also controversially expressed a wish that Buhari’s widow would remarry, adding another layer of provocation to her post.
“Hope his family can now tell the world he was 89 and not 82 cos he was 48yo same age as my dad in 1983 when he took over Shagari’s democracy,” she stated in her tweet.
