Popular Nigerian highlife musician Chinedu Okoli, better known by his stage name Flavour, has reflected on a powerful and career-defining moment during his early days as an artist, where he was inspired by none other than the iconic music duo, P-Square.
During his appearance on a recent episode of the In My Opinion podcast, Flavour shared a personal story about how an experience involving Peter and Paul Okoye of P-Square shifted his perspective on music and helped shape his journey from a live performer to a respected recording artist.
Flavour recounted an event that took place years ago when he was still performing mostly as a live band artist. On that particular day, he was on stage giving his usual performance when P-Square walked into the venue. According to Flavour, their manager promptly asked him to stop playing and hand over the microphone to the superstar duo.
What happened next left a strong impression on him. As Paul Okoye belted out their popular lyric “This na temptation,” the entire venue erupted in excitement. The audience’s overwhelming response, Flavour said, was a wake-up call that made him rethink his path as a musician.
He explained that while he had always been a strong vocalist and performer, that moment showed him the impact of having original music. Watching P-Square command the crowd with their own sound, he realized the difference between performing covers or existing tunes and creating something truly original that people could connect with on a deeper level.
“That moment changed everything for me,” Flavour admitted. “I saw firsthand what it meant to be a complete artist—not just someone who performs but someone who creates, who writes, and who records music. That’s when I knew I had to transition from being a band singer to becoming a true recording artist.”
The story highlights the strong influence P-Square had, not just on fans across Africa and beyond, but on fellow musicians like Flavour, who went on to become one of the most respected voices in Nigerian highlife music. With a successful career boasting hits like “Ada Ada,” “Nwa Baby (Ashawo Remix),” and “Golibe,” Flavour has since carved out his own legacy—one that was, in part, shaped by that powerful and humbling encounter.
Social media has since reacted warmly to the revelation, with many fans applauding Flavour for his honesty and humility, and also giving P-Square their flowers for helping pave the way for younger artists with their influence and artistry.
