The statement, originally made on his X (formerly Twitter) account, immediately triggered a wave of criticism and debate across social media platforms. Many followers, particularly from the Christian and Muslim faiths, condemned his remarks, pointing to religious doctrines that define premarital sex as sinful.

In a recent interview with Arise TV, Falz took the opportunity to explain his perspective in more detail. He said that his comment was not based on the religious teachings of Christianity or Islam but was rooted in his personal moral compass and belief system.

“I think people would read the tweet and just assume that I meant according to Christianity. I wasn’t really speaking from that perspective,” Falz explained.

He elaborated that under the ideology he follows — which he described as the “religion of love” — consensual relationships between unmarried adults are not seen as sinful. According to him, this belief system focuses on love, respect, and mutual understanding rather than rules and doctrines.

“Under that religion, I don’t think fornication is a sin. Because I looked at it, I strictly addressed the issue: Why are we not allowed to engage in this premarital intercourse? What is the issue? Who does it offend? These are not married people. These are two unmarried people. Willingly. Consensually. Personally, I don’t think there is a problem there,” he said.

Falz’s statements have further fueled discussions about personal faith versus institutional religion, especially among Nigeria’s youth, many of whom are increasingly questioning traditional norms.

In the same interview, the singer also made a shocking declaration regarding his faith identity. “I’m no longer a Christian. I practice the religion of love,” he revealed.

His remarks continue to dominate social media discourse, with some applauding his honesty and courage to speak his truth, while others remain critical of what they consider a dangerous misinterpretation of moral values.
